Ward Sausmarez Carey was born in Gillingham on 26 October 1866 and was educated at Rossall School and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the West Yorkshire Regiment on 14 November 1888, and was promoted Lieutenant on 24 September 1890, and Captain on 20 March 1895. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War, from 21 October 1899, and saw active service during the operations in Natal 1899, including the Relief of Ladysmith and the action at Colenso; during the operations of 17-24 January 1900 and the action at Spion Kop; the operations of 5-7 February 1900 and the action at Vaal Kranz; the operations on Tugela Heights, 14-27 February 1900, and Pieters Hill; during operations in the Natal from March to June 1900 including the action at Laings Nek, 6-9 June; and operations in the Transvaal from July 1900 to 31 May 1902. For his services in South Africa he was Mentioned in Lord Roberts’ Despatch for having ‘rendered special and meritorious service’ (London Gazette 10 September 1901), and was promoted Brevet Major. He transferred to the Army Pay Department as Paymaster on 1 July 1901, and retired in 1920. He died at Goring-on-Thames on 18 February 1940.

If you live within the UK, items will be despatched using Royal Mail Special Delivery. This service provides parcel tracking (via the Royal Mail website) and next weekday delivery (betwen 9am and 1pm). Items delivered within the UK are covered by our insurance company. Heavy and bulky lots will be sent by courier, in discussion with the client.

Outside of the UK
If the item/s being sent are worth under £1000 in total they are sent using Royal Mail’s Signed For International service. This ensures the item must be signed for when it is delivered.
If the item/s being sent are valued at over £1000 in total they will be sent using FedEx. This service allows next day delivery to customers in many parts of the US and parcels are fully trackable using the FedEx website.
