Harold Escombe was born in Westend, Hampshire on 16 September 1874, and entered the Royal Navy as a Cadet in Britannia in January 1888, aged 13. His first seagoing appointment was as a Midshipman in the cruiser H.M.S. Undaunted in the Mediterranean, under Lord Charles Beresford. Having then been advanced to Lieutenant in the battleship Revenge in June 1897, he was specially selected by the Commander-in-Chief in February 1899 to be one of three naval officers that had been asked for by General Lord Kitchener for services on the Nile during the closing stages of the reconquest of the Sudan. He was subsequently mentioned in despatches by Colonel Sir Reginald Wingate for services in connection with operations against the Khalifa on the White Nile in November 1899 (London Gazette 30 January 1900, refers), in addition to receiving the approbation of Their Lordships.
In the period leading up to the Great War, Escombe served as Flag Lieutenant to Rear-Admiral Sir G. Noel, Flag Officer commanding Reserves and the Coast Guard, and as Flag Lieutenant to Vice-Admiral Sir G. H. U. Noel, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., Commander-in-Chief of the China station. He also specialised in Signals and Wireless Telegraphy and was serving as an Intelligence Officer at the Admiralty on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914. In January 1915, he joined the Inflexible as a Commander and staff officer in the Mediterranean Fleet, and in March 1915 he joined Egmont as Flag Captain to Rear-Admiral R. E. Wymyss, C.M.G., M.V.O. Just a month later, however, he was appointed Senior Naval Officer, Mudros. And he commanded the Europa from July 1917, then flying the flag of Rear-Admiral A. Hayes-Sadler, C.S.I. For his services in the Eastern Mediterranean, Escombe was awarded the C.M.G. and the Greek Order of the Redeemer, 3rd Class (London Gazette 17 April 1918, refers).
Returning home in the summer of 1918, he received his C.M.G. at Buckingham Palace on 1 June and was appointed Assistant to the Senior Naval Officer, Liverpool at Eaglet. Having then inherited that office from his predecessor, he was placed on the Retired List as a Captain in September 1920. He died in March 1933, aged 59.
