W. Napier. Victoria Column.); Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Rhodesia, Relief of Mafeking (Col. W. Napier, C.M.G. S. Rhod: R.F.) toned, extremely fine (3) £2,200-£2,600

Provenance: Christie’s, July 1985.

William Napier was born in Scotland in 1861 and entered the service of the British South Africa Company in 1891, having previously served as a Trooper in the Natal Carbineers for four years. He joined the Victoria Rangers as a Subaltern in 1892 and, as Captain, commanded a troop under Major Alan Wilson on the Shangani patrol during the advance into Matabeleland in 1893 and was present at all the engagements which led to the subjugation of Lobengulu’s forces. Napier was in command of the whole of the armed forces in Rhodesia, 1895. As Colonel of the Buluwayo Field Force he commanded all local forces engaged in suppressing the Matabeleland rebellion of 1896, up to the arrival of Sir Richard Martin (mentioned in despatches, C.M.G.: ‘Colonel Napier, Buluwayo Field Force (Merchant), Commanded the Buluwayo Field Force in early operations, also several patrols, including the column which met that coming from Salisbury to the relief of Buluwayo. Latterly Town Commandant of Buluwayo). During the Second Boer War 1899-1900, Napier commanded ‘A’ Squadron of the Southern Rhodesia Reserve Force. Colonel Napier died at Hillside, Buluwayo, on 29 January 1920.

Within the UK
If you live within the UK, items will be despatched using Royal Mail Special Delivery. This service provides parcel tracking (via the Royal Mail website) and next weekday delivery (betwen 9am and 1pm). Items delivered within the UK are covered by our insurance company. Heavy and bulky lots will be sent by courier, in discussion with the client.

Outside of the UK
If the item/s being sent are worth under £1000 in total they are sent using Royal Mail’s Signed For International service. This ensures the item must be signed for when it is delivered.
If the item/s being sent are valued at over £1000 in total they will be sent using FedEx. This service allows next day delivery to customers in many parts of the US and parcels are fully trackable using the FedEx website.

Shipping Exceptions
