A very good Great War D.S.O., M.C., group of four awarded to Major G.L.D. Rewcastle, Royal Garrison Artillery, who was awarded the D.S.O. for gallantry whilst attempting to extinguish a fire at an ammunition store. Subsequently awarded the M.C. for his actions during the German Spring Offensive, he was killed during an ambush in Southern Nigeria on 27 January 1924, whilst an Acting Commissioner with the Nigerian Police

L. D. Rewcastle’, in Garrard, London, case of issue; Military Cross, G.V.R., the reverse contemporarily engraved ‘G. L. D. Rewcastle. 28/3/18.’; British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaves (Major G. L. D. Rewcastle.) the last two mounted for wear, very fine (4) £3,000-£4,000

‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Assisted by a Gunner, he extinguished a fire in a store of mortar bombs and ammunition. Although twice knocked down by explosions, he succeeded in preventing the fire reaching the S.A.A. boxes, thus saving many lives.’
M.C. London Gazette, 22 June 1918.
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When in command of his battery during an enemy attack, he kept all his guns in action despite very heavy shell fire until ordered to withdraw The withdrawal was carried out in perfect order, gun by gun, fire being maintained until the last moment. His coolness and skilful handling of his command were most marked.’

George Lyon Duncan Rewcastle, was born in South Shields on 15 November 1890. He attested into the Royal Garrison Artillery on 27 November 1914 for service during the Great War. Commissioned on 18 October 1915, he served on the Western Front and was awarded the D.S.O. whilst a Second Lieutenant, for gallantry at Trones Wood on 7 August 1916. It was personally presented to him by the King. A Military Medal was additionally awarded to a Gunner for the same action. His wound stripe was authorised on 7 September 1916. An almost identical episode is alluded to in A G Macdonell's, 'England Their England', published in London, 1933. Advanced Acting Major on 12 March 1918, he was awarded the M.C. for his actions during the German Spring Offensive. Post War, he joined the Nigerian Police on 19 July 1919. Appointed Acting Commissioner of Police, he was shot and killed during an ambush whilst attending a dispute with villagers on 27 January 1924, at Achima, Onitsha, Nigeria. Two African Police Meritorious Service Medals medals were awarded to Sergeant Major Adegbite Offa and Constable Lawani Idah, Nigerian Police, for distinguished service on this patrol.
