The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, C.B.E., (Civil) Commander’s 2nd type, lady’s shoulder badge, silver-gilt and enamel, on lady’s bow riband, with additional full section of neck riband, in Garrard, London, case of issue; Defence Medal; Coronation 1953, unnamed as issued; Voluntary Medical Service Medal, with one ‘Geneva Cross’ Additional Award Bar (The Lady (Marie Enid) Burnham), the latter three all mounted court-style for wear, extremely fine (4) £300-£400

C.B.E. London Gazette 13 June 1957: The Right Honourable Marie Enid, Baroness Burnham, J.P., Chief Commissioner for England, Girl Guides Association.

Marie Enid, Baroness Burnham, was born in Buenos Aires on 27 May 1894, the daughter of Hugh Scott Robson, a British-Argentine polo player, and married Colonel (later Major-General) Edward Frederick Lawson, D.S.O., M.C., on 28 January 1920; her husband had served with distinction during the Great War with both the Royal Bucks Hussars and later the Middlesex Yeomanry, and post-War resumed his newspaper career with the Daily Telegraph (which was owned by his uncle, the 2nd Baron Burnham), ultimately becoming the Daily Telegraph’s general manager. He succeeded his father as 4th Baron Burnham on 14 June 1943.

Lady Burnham (as she became in 1943 following her husband’s succession to the peerage) served as President of the Buckinghamshire Red Cross Society from 1936 to 1964, and President of the Buckinghamshire Federation of Women’s Institutes form 1947 to 1952. A leading figure in the Girl Guides movement, she served successively as Chief Commissioner for England from 1951 to 1960; as President from 1961 to 1970, and then as Vice-President from 1971 until her death on 29 July 1979. For her services to the Girl Guides movement she was created a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1957 Birthday Honours’ List.

If you are successful in purchasing lot/s being auctioned by us and opt for the item/s to be sent to you, we will use the following methods of shipment:

Within the UK
If you live within the UK, items will be despatched using Royal Mail Special Delivery. This service provides parcel tracking (via the Royal Mail website) and next weekday delivery (betwen 9am and 1pm). Items delivered within the UK are covered by our insurance company. Heavy and bulky lots will be sent by courier, in discussion with the client.

Outside of the UK
If the item/s being sent are worth under £1000 in total they are sent using Royal Mail’s Signed For International service. This ensures the item must be signed for when it is delivered.
If the item/s being sent are valued at over £1000 in total they will be sent using FedEx. This service allows next day delivery to customers in many parts of the US and parcels are fully trackable using the FedEx website.

Shipping Exceptions
Certain lots such as those containing glass or sharp implements, etc., may not be suitable for in-house shipping within or outside of the UK. Please contact Noonans with any queries.
