‘In recognition of distinguished services rendered in connection with the operations in Palestine during the period April to October 1936.’
Llewellyn Henry Hobbs was born in Acton on 5 January 1908 and attested for the Royal Army Service Corps at Warley on 5 March 1926. He served attached to the Headquarters of the 15th Infantry Brigade as Acting Squadron Quarter Master Sergeant in Palestine in 1936, for which services he was Mentioned in Despatches. Subsequently posted to the Headquarters of the Singapore Fortress, he was captured and taken Prisoner of War following the Fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942. Appointed Warrant Officer Class I (War Substantive Staff Sergeant Major) the day after his capture, he was initially held at Changi from 17 February 1942 to 15 May 1943, before being held at three Japanese Prisoner of War Camps: Yakumo (Hakodate No.1 Detached Camp) from 10 July 1943 to 25 October 1943; Muroran Branch Camp from 25 October 1943 to 5 June 1945, where the prisoners were used by the Nippon Steel Company; and Ashibetsu Branch Camp from 5 June 1945 to 11 September 1945, where the prisoners were used by the Mitsui Mining Company. Repatriated following he cessation of hostilities, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 27 in 1947. Commissioned Lieutenant, he was advanced Captain on 18 August 1949, and died in Hounslow on 9 July 1970.
