Reginald Clare Hastings D'Oyly was born in Christchurch, Hampshire on 2 October 1918, the son of Vice-Admiral Warren Hastings D'Oyly and a descendant of the 11th Baronet Hastings of Shottisham, Norfolk. He joined the Royal Naval Engineering College at Keyham as a Midshipman (E.) in September 1936 and was promoted to Lieutenant (E.) on passing out of the college in September 1940.
Having then joined the cruiser H.M.S. Bonaventure in the following month, he quickly saw action in an Egypt bound convoy in December 1940, when she faced off an attack by the Admiral Scheer and sank the enemy blockade runner Baden. Allocated to the Malta run in the new year, Bonaventure also assisted at the destruction of the Italian gunboat Circe, prior to undertaking patrols in the Aegean.
On 31 March 1941, however, she was hit by two torpedoes from the Italian submarine Ambra and capsized and sank within minutes, taking with her 23 officers, including D’Oyly, and 116 ratings. He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
