A Second War Dutch group of three awarded to Warrant Officer G. Wielinga, Geographical Service, Royal Dutch Indonesian Army, who was captured and taken Prisoner of War by the Japanese in 1942

Netherlands, Kingdom, Commemorative War Cross, bronze, mounted for wear, with Fa. A. Tack, Breda label to reverse; Cross for Order and Peace, bronze, mounted for wear, with Fa. A. Tack, Breda label to reverse; Army Long Service Medal, small silver medal, mounted for wear, nearly extremely fine (3) £100-£140

---

Gerrit Wielinga was born at Sneek on 13 October 1912 and served with the Royal Dutch Indonesian Army during the Second World War as a Warrant Officer in the Geographical Service. He was captured and taken Prisoner of War by the Japanese, and was held initially in Java, and then at No. 6 Camp, Thailand. Whilst there he wrote various letters home, although clearly they were written partly for the benefit of his Japanese captors - a typical entry reads: ‘My health is excellent and the Japanese treat us well.’ He was repatriated at the end of the War.

Sold with the following original documents and other ephemera:
i) Bestowal Certificates for the War Cross and the Cross for Order and Peace, these both named to G. Wielinga.
ii) The recipient’s two identity cards.
iii) Bestowal Document giving details of the recipient’s War service.
iv) Various letters and telegrams written to and from the recipient whilst a Prisoner of War in both Java and Thailand.
v) A hand-drawn map on canvas of the central Thailand, depicting the route of the Burma-Siam Railway, believed to have been drawn by the recipient whilst a Prisoner of War.
vi) Rank and unit insignia; and other ephemera.
