Samuel Overend attested for the East Surrey Regiment and served with the 3rd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War, and then with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 22 October 1914. He was killed in action during the battalion’s epic stand at Hill 60 on 20 April 1915, during which the Battalion suffered 7 officers and 106 other ranks killed, and 8 officers and 158 other ranks wounded, and was awarded 3 Victoria Crosses, 2 Military Crosses, and 9 Distinguished Conduct Medals. He is buried in Oosttaverne Wood Cemetery, Belgium.

George Burrows was born in St. Helens, Lancashire, and attested for the South Lancashire Regiment at Warrington, Lancashire. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 August 1914, and was killed in action at Frameries during the Battle of Mons on 24 August 1914. He has no known grave and is commemorated on La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial, France.

Edward Phillips was born in Hanley, Staffordshire, and attested for the 14th (2nd Barnsley Pals) Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment at Barnsley. He served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 1916, and is recorded in Soldiers Died as having been killed in action on 8 July 1916; however, another source states that he was in fact mortally wounded during the Battalion’s assault on the German line at Serre on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, and was captured and taken prisoner of war, dying in captivity a week later. He is buried in Caudry Old Communal Cemetery, France; in July 1916 the town of Caudry was in German hands and was a centre of various medical units, which gives further credence to this latter suggestion.
