Seven: Brigadier P. F. C. Bloxam, C.B.E., Royal Army Pay Corps, late West Yorkshire Regiment, who, for his services during the Second World War in North West Europe, was both Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the O.B.E.

1939-45 Star; Africa Star, 1 clasp, 1st Army; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, with M.I.D. oak leaf; General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Near East (Col. P. F. C. Bloxam. O.B.E. Staff.); Coronation 1953, unnamed as issued, mounted for wear, lacquered, generally very fine (7) £200-£240

---

C.B.E. London Gazette 12 June 1965.
The original Recommendation states: ‘Brigadier Bloxam was commissioned in January 2925 into the West Yorkshire Regiment. In January 1939, he was attached on probation to the Royal Army Pay Corps, and transferred to that Corps in October 1940. During World War Two he served in North Africa and with 2nd Army Group in Europe, and since the War has served in Hong Kong, Malta, and with Headquarters 2 Corps as Chief Paymaster during the Suez Operations.
Brigadier Bloxam has been Command Paymaster at Headquarters, Southern Command since July 1962, and under his wise and firm direction, the Pay Services in the Command have functioned with complete efficiency. The many emergency moves of individuals and units of 3 Division, and the reinforcements for British Guiana, have created many additional problems, but the arrangements made by Brigadier Bloxam have ensured that the needs of the individuals and units were always provided for in time. Throughout his Service, he has displayed quite exceptional devotion to duty, and loyalty to his Corps and the Army, and has, without any doubt, maintained the very highest standards professionally. Brigadier Bloxam is retiring in June this year, and it is recommended that his long and valuable service should be appropriately recognised.’

O.B.E. London Gazette 11 October 1945 (North West Europe).
The original Recommendation, dated 22 May 1945, states: ‘Lieutenant-Colonel Bloxam has rendered valuable service in his capacity of Assistant Paymaster-in-Chief, Second Army. His work, which has been of a very high standard throughout the campaign, has been specially meritorious during the period under review. In spite of a long L of C, involving changes of currency owing to the crossing of several frontiers, in spite of the wide dispersion of formations, resulting from three Corps being almost continuously in action, he has contrived to organise the pay Services of the Amy with remarkable efficiency and skill. He has carried out his duties with outstanding ability.’

M.I.D. London Gazette 22 March 1945 (North West Europe).

Patrick Francis Cholmley Bloxam was born at Pinner, Middlesex, on 9 June 1905, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the West Yorkshire Regiment from the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, on 29 January 1925. Promoted Lieutenant on 29 January 1927, he resigned his commission as a Lieutenant on 29 March 1930, but subsequently rejoined the West Yorkshire Regiment, and was seconded for service in the Royal Army Pay Corps on 4 January 1939. Promoted Captain on 3 May 1940, he served as Temporary Major and Staff Paymaster from October 1940 to June 1941, before embarking for North Africa on 30 October 1942. He saw further service during the Second World War in North West Europe from 17 June 1944. For his services during the Second World War he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire and was Mentioned in Despatches.

Post-War, Bloxam remained in the Royal Army Pay Corps, and his postings included Commissioned Paymaster, Hong Kong, 1948-49, and the same appointment for Malta from February 1954. He was advanced to Lieutenant Colonel and Staff Paymaster 1st Class on 1 February 1951, and retired as an Honorary Brigadier on 9 June 1965. For his services he was advanced a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1965 Birthday Honours’ List. He died in Poole, Dorset, on 6 September 1990.

Sold with a small photograph of the recipient; and copied research.
