A Second War ‘Malta operations’ O.B.E. group of eight awarded to Major H. G. Ensoll, Royal Army Pay Corps, who was twice Mentioned in Despatches

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, O.B.E., (Military) Officer’s 2nd type breast badge, silver-gilt; 1914-15 Star (1343. Pte. H. G. Ensoll. A.P.C.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaves (Lieut. H. G. Ensoll.); 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, with M.I.D. oak leaf, mounted court-style for wear, good very fine and better (8) £300-£400

---

O.B.E. London Gazette 14 October 1943.

The original Recommendation states: ‘I cannot speak too highly of the service rendered by this officer. He has carried out all the duties of Assistant Command Paymaster in a most efficient, tactful, and helpful manner and without sparing himself in any way. His sound technical knowledge has been of great assistance to the staff and the many officers and others who called at the Pay Office for advice and assistance in many matters. The absence of a Financial Advisor in this Command throws are heavy and extra burden onto the A.C.P. and Major Ensoll has carried out all those extra duties with great merit. I understand from my predecessor that Major Ensoll has been recommended on previous occasions. He has served in Malta in his present capacity (with no advancement by promotion) since 1939 and was, I am informed, in a large measure responsible for keeping the office going and up-to-date during all the blitzes (during which the office suffered on three occasions) and his calmness, tact, imperturbability and cheerfulness set a fine example to his subordinates. I have known Major Ensoll for a very long time; he retires in June next and I make the recommendation in the full knowledge that any honour awarded him will be thoroughly merited.’

M.I.D. London Gazettes 6 December 1916 (Salonika); 24 June 1943 (Malta).

Henry Gordon Ensoll was born in Stoke Newington on 24 June 1883 and served prior to the Great War for 9 years in the 5th County of London Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. Following the outbreak of the Great War he attested for the Army Pay Corps in London on 25 September 1914, and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 30 March 191, before proceeding to Salonika on 26 November 1915. Appointed Acting Sergeant on 29 March 1916, he was Mentioned in Despatches, before being commissioned Lieutenant in the Army Pay Department on 18 September 1918. Promoted Captain in the Royal Army Pay Corps on 18 September 1923, and Major on 18 September 1934, he was posted to Malta on 2 November 1939, and served during the Second World War on the island until retiring, having reached the age limit, on 24 June 1943. For his services during the Second World War on Malta he was both Mentioned in Despatches and created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. He died in Eastbourne on 1 September 1962.
