Crimea 1854-56, 4 clasps, Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol (Qr. Master J. Aylett. XXth Regt.) contemporaryily engraved naming; Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Lucknow (Qr. Mr. J. Aylett, 1st Bn. 20th Regt.); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., large letter reverse (Js. Aylett, 20th Regt. 11th May 1854. No. 806 Qr. Mr. Serjt.) fitted with replacement straight suspension with silver clasp; Turkish Crimea, British issue, unnamed as issued, pierced with small ring suspension, light contact marks, otherwise good very fine (4) £1,400-£1,800

James Aylett was born in Leitram, Ireland, and enlisted into the 20th Regiment of Foot at Blegaum, India, on 15 October 1832, by ‘special permission to be trained as Drummer’, aged 16 years. He was appointed probationary Orderly Room Clerk on 10 January 1837, and promoted to Corporal on 31 May 1837; Paymaster Sergeant on 15 February 1839;; and Quartermaster Sergeant on 1 July 1851. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 11 May 1854, and was commissioned as Quartermaster whilst serving in the Crimea on 9 February 1855. He was initially recommended for an Ensigncy, being ‘the most deserving non-commissioned officer’ in the regiment, but took the position of Quartermaster at his own request. After service in India during the Great Sepoy Mutiny, he exchanged into the 29th Regiment of Foot on 23 March 1859, and thereafter served at Home and in Ireland until he went on half-pay with the honorary rank of Captain on 30 June 1865. He retired on 1 July 1881, and died on 21 May 1882.

Within the UK
If you live within the UK, items will be despatched using Royal Mail Special Delivery. This service provides parcel tracking (via the Royal Mail website) and next weekday delivery (betwen 9am and 1pm). Items delivered within the UK are covered by our insurance company. Heavy and bulky lots will be sent by courier, in discussion with the client.

Outside of the UK
If the item/s being sent are worth under £1000 in total they are sent using Royal Mail’s Signed For International service. This ensures the item must be signed for when it is delivered.
If the item/s being sent are valued at over £1000 in total they will be sent using FedEx. This service allows next day delivery to customers in many parts of the US and parcels are fully trackable using the FedEx website.
