George Wallace Nelson was born in Rawalpindi, India, on 27 December 1894 and attested for the 9th Battalion, Royal Scots, at Edinburgh on 7 December 1909. He transferred to the Lothian and Border Horse Yeomanry on 3 May 1912, and then to the Gordon Highlanders (Regular Army) on 28 December 1912. Appointed Lance-Corporal on 14 February 1914, he served during the Great War on the Western Front from 13 August 1914, and was promoted Lance-Sergeant on 4 May 1915. Wounded on 17 May 1915, he was evacuated to the U.K., and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Gordon Highlanders on 24 May 1915. Returning to France with the 3rd Battalion on 6 April 1916, he was captured and taken Prisoner of War on 18 July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme. Promoted Lieutenant on 2 October 1916, whilst in captivity he was repatriated via Switzerland on 13 September 1917, and was appointed to a temporary commission at Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 13th Balloon Base, R.A.F. Rathmullan, Lough Swilly, County Donegal. Attending a medical board he was found permanently unfit for duty, having suffered gun shot wound to his right thigh and a subsequent amputation.

Nelson transferred to the Royal Army Pay Corps as a Lieutenant and Paymaster on 18 June 1920, and was promoted Captain on 18 June 1925. He served with them in the inter-War years in Shanghai and Malta, and was promoted Major and Staff Paymaster on 5 April 1929; and Lieutenant-Colonel on 5 April 1934. Appointed Acting Colonel and Chief Paymaster on 9 December 1940, he served during the Second World War in Egypt from 21 March 1943, ands was appointed Chief Paymaster, Palestine and Syria, on 10 May 1943. Promoted Colonel and Chief Paymaster on 4 September 1951, he retired on account of his disability on 20 September 1952, and died in Tavistock, Devon, on 30 January 1987.

Outside of the UK
If the item/s being sent are worth under £1000 in total they are sent using Royal Mail’s Signed For International service. This ensures the item must be signed for when it is delivered.
