Edward I and II (1296-1318), Occupation of Berwick, Pennies (3), all Berwick-upon-Tweed, class Ia, narrow face, reads hyb’, 1.39g/6h cf. SCBI North 1123); class IIc, crude bust and lettering, 1.43g/4h (North 1131); class IVb, bifoliate crown, pellet on breast, Lombardic n in dns, 1.19g/9h (North 1139; N 1072; S 1415). Good fine, first with small chip at 12 o’clock, second very rare £80-£100

---

Provenance: First bt eBay July 2009; second bt ABC Coins and Tokens July 2009; third bt eBay August 2006

Blunt recognises three varieties of crude Sterlings which he attributes to the period 1297-8. While types IIa and IIb are muled with dies of Class I, those of type IIc are not, and have more affinity with the later coins of Blunt class VII. Because of that, the vendor, along with Withers, feels that chronologically these coins belong near the end of the series, after c. 1315.
