ENGLAND, Department of Science and Art, Queen’s National Medal, [1856], a copper award by L.C. Wyon after W. Wyon, coronetted bust of Victoria left, rev. legend within wreath, edge named (Mary Cornelissen, St Martin’s, Stage 8D, 1871), 55mm, 92.30g (Attwood 21c; BDM VI, 685; Hocking p.219, 27-9; E 1511; cf. Baldwin 113, 840; cf. DNW 193, 1184). Extremely fine, reflective patina £80-£100

Marie Elizabeth Cornelissen, later Marie Seymour Lucas (1850-1921), b. Paris, moved to London aged 10, painter of historical works and genre scenes, later concentrated on domestic scenes with children, married John Seymour Lucas on 18 July 1877. They are buried in a joint grave at Holy Trinity Church, Blythburgh, Suffolk. See also lot 947; other medals awarded to her husband were sold in previous parts of the Silich collection (lots 21 and 420).
The rapid growth in the number of schools, and hence policing appropriate examination standards, led in 1856 to the introduction of a new system of prize-giving devised by Henry Cole and Richard Redgrave at the Department of Science and Art. Designs for appropriate medals were commissioned of Wyon in November 1856 and the first examples had been struck by the Spring of 1857 (Attwood, pp.369-71)

If you live within the UK, items will be despatched using Royal Mail Special Delivery. This service provides parcel tracking (via the Royal Mail website) and next weekday delivery (betwen 9am and 1pm). Items delivered within the UK are covered by our insurance company. Heavy and bulky lots will be sent by courier, in discussion with the client.
Outside of the UK
If the item/s being sent are worth under £1000 in total they are sent using Royal Mail’s Signed For International service. This ensures the item must be signed for when it is delivered.
If the item/s being sent are valued at over £1000 in total they will be sent using FedEx. This service allows next day delivery to customers in many parts of the US and parcels are fully trackable using the FedEx website.
