Baudichon, René-Adrien-Anatole-Joseph (French, 1878-1963); b. Tours

FRANCE, Pelote Basque [Basque Pelota], 1937, an Art Nouveau bronze award plaque by R.-A.-A.-J. Baudichon, pelota players contest a game on a walled court or pediment, basque crosses in upper corners, pediment and several chisteras [gloves] below, rev. evocation of ancient games of pelota, stadium above representation of a Greek coin of Alexander the Great on a club, oak and olive trees at sides, tablet in centre un-named, edge impressed bronze and cornucopia, 74 x 53mm, 116.73g (CGMP p.25). Extremely fine £30-£40

---

Provenance: Bt Simmons April 2002.

Basque pelota is the universal term for a variety of court sports played with a ball using one's hand, a racket, a wooden bat or a basket, against a wall or, more traditionally and as seen on this plaque, between two teams separated by a line on the ground or a net. The roots of this class of games can be traced to Greek and other ancient cultures, hence the iconography on the reverse
