SPAIN/FRANCE, Bataille de Sommo Sierra et abolition de l’Inquisition [Battle of Somosierra and Abolition of the Inquisition], 1808, a copper medal by B. Andrieu and N.-G.-A. Brenet, after A.-É. Fragonard, laureate bust of Napoléon to right, rev. Napoléon in biga to right, trampling on a figure of the Inquisition who attempts to stop the horses passing through the Pillars of Hercules, 40mm, 32.56g (Bramsen 756; cf. Alexander 95, recté Brenet; CGMP p.68; BDM I, 274; Slg. Julius 1944; cf. Varesi e10, 385; cf. CNG e444, 551; cf. Elsen 140, 1283). About extremely fine £80-£100

---

Provenance: Bt H.-D. Rauch July 2004.

France sought to seize and control Spain as part of its effort to seal off Europe to British goods and trade. In the wake of Napoléon’s elder brother, Joseph, being crowned King of Spain in May 1808, resistance to France among the Spanish provincial armies grew and after a number of reverses Napoléon accompanied his troops to Spain, capturing and sacking Burgos and then, en route to Madrid and with the assistance of a troop of Polish light cavalry, emerged victorious in a battle in the mountains of Puerto de Somosierra on 30 November. After a three-day stand-off, Madrid capitulated on 4 December and, occupying the city, Napoléon proceeded to suppress the Inquisition and seize its property and assets.

Although the reverse of the medal bears the partial signature of Romain Jeuffroy, it is the work of Nicolas Brenet (Bramsen and CGMP refers)
