V.C. London Gazette 24 April 1858:
‘On the breaking out of a mutiny in the 27th Bombay Native Infantry in July 1857, a party of the mutineers took up a position in the stronghold, or paga, near the town of Kolapore, and defended themselves to extremity. Lieutenant Kerr, of the Southern Mahratta Irregular Horse, took a prominent share of the attack on the position, and at the moment when its capture was of great public importance, he made a dash at one of the gateways, with some dismounted horsemen, and forced an entrance by breaking down the gate. The attack was completely successful, and the defenders were either killed, wounded, or captured, a result that may with perfect justice be attributed to Lieutenant Kerr’s dashing and devoted bravery.’

William Alexander Kerr was born at Melrose, Roxburghshire, on 18 July 1831 and was commissioned Ensign in the 59th Regiment of Foot on 6 July 1849. He transferred to the H.E.I.C. Forces on 14 June 1851, and was posted to the 24th Bombay Native Infantry on 8 December 1852. Appointed Adjutant of the Southern Mahratta Horse on 3 October 1854, he served with them during the Great Sepoy Mutiny, and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry in suppressing the mutiny of the 27th Bombay Native Infantry at Kholapur on 31 July 1857; stationed at Satara, he rode the 81 miles south to Kholapur in just over a day. He was invested with his Victoria Cross by Major-General F. T. Farrell, Commanding Southern Division of the Army, at Belgaum on 4 September 1858, and was additionally entitled to the Indian Mutiny Medal with clasp Central India. He resigned his commission on 12 March 1862, and died in Folkestone, Kent, on 21 May 1919.

Note: Kerr’s original Victoria Cross was sold at Sotherby’s in May 2000, and now forms part of the Lord Ashcroft V.C. Collection. The purpose of the copy Cross in this lot is open to speculation - it may be that the recipient had it named up for everyday wear.

Sold with a file of copied research.
