A Great War ‘Western Front’ M.C. group of three awarded to Second Lieutenant H. Robartes, Royal Field Artillery, for his gallantry in knocking out an enemy machine gun on 10 November 1918 - one of the last gallantry awards of the Great War, and likely the last Military Cross awarded for the Western Front

Military Cross, G.V.R., unnamed as issued; British War and Victory Medals (2. Lieut. H. Robartes.) lightly polished, nearly very fine (3) £700-£900

---

M.C. London Gazette 2 April 1919; citation published 11 December 1919:
‘For conspicuous gallantry and resource on the 10th November 1918, when he took a section forward with the infantry, and came into action within twenty-five yards of the front line, east of the Mons-Maubeuge road. He displayed great courage and skill, knocking out one machine gun, dispersing many of the enemy, ands inflicting serious casualties on them. The withdrawal from his forward position was successfully carried out under shell fire.’

Henry Robartes was born on 21 September 1897 and attested for 183 Brigade, Royal Garrison Artillery in mid-1915, serving with them during the Great War on the Western Front from May 1916. Advanced Battery Sergeant Major, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in ‘A” Battery, 59th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery on 26 April 1918, and was awarded his Military Cross for his gallantry on 10 November 1918, one day before the Armistice: one of the last gallantry awards of the Great War, and likely the last Military Cross awarded for the Western Front, certainly the last one for which a citation has survived
