The rolls confirm John Tulloh as a Lieutenant aboard the Illustrious for the operations leading to the capture of Java in September 1811, and as a Lieutenant of the Desirée for the capture of the Fortess of Gluckstadt on 5 January 1814, the latter clasp being one of 42 on the Admiralty roll.

John Tulloh entered the Royal Navy on 3 May 1803, as an Ordinary Seaman aboard the Raisonnable 64, Captains William Hotham, Thomas Vivion, and Robert Barton, employed in the Downs and on the coast of Ireland, but quickly attained the rank of Midshipman and was removed in March 1805 to the Combatant 20, Captain Hon. George Elliot, with whom he continued to serve in the Aurora 28 and Modeste 36, again in the Downs, and in the Mediterranean and East Indies. Whilst on the latter station he was nominated, 1 May 1810, Acting-Lieutenant of the Dasher sloop, Captains Robert Worgan, George Festing, and William Kelly. In October 1808 the Modeste, after a running action of nearly an hour, in which she had her Master and one seaman wounded, captured La Jena French national corvette, of 18 guns (pierced for 24) and 150 men.
Confirmed in the rank of Lieutenant on 12 March 1811, he removed from the Dasher in April 1811, to the Illustrious 74, in which ship, bearing the broad pendant of Commodore William Robert Broughton, he co-operated in the reduction of Java. In May 1813, about a year after he had returned to England, Tulloh was placed in command of Gun-Boat No. 4 in the river Elbe where he remained until the early part of 1814, and was inconsequence present in the operations against Cuxhaven and Gluckstadt, being mentioned in despatches by Captain Arthur Farquhar of the Desirée for his services (London Gazette 15 January 1814). His last appointment afloat was to the Archer sloop, Captain William Slaughter, in which vessel, in the Downs, he served from 20 July to 4 September 1815. In February 1837 he gained employment on the staff of the Captain Superintendent of the Naval Hospital at Plymouth, and is still listed as such in August 1852. He was promoted to Retired Commander on 8 September 1863, and is still shown in the Navy List for 1869.
